What is the purpose of the academy?

The academy is designed to increase understanding between citizens and the Sandy City Fire Department through education. Our intent is to acquaint citizens with the role of the fire department within the Fire and Emergency Medical system and provide an increased understanding of the tasks firefighters face in their daily work. The instructors are officers, firefighters and paramedics that will teach in their areas of expertise. Each instructor has years of training and emergency experience in the fire service.

What is included in the academy?

The topics presented include, but are not limited to: firefighter safety, breathing apparatus, fire gear, fire streams, search & rescue, and fire scenarios. The instruction will be done in a classroom format, but will also have plenty of hands on experience. Academy members will also have the opportunity to do a 4 hour "ride along" experience with a working fire crew. This will allow participants to see first-hand how firefighters perform their duties in a variety of situations. Upon graduation the participants will receive a certificate of completion and an academy T-shirt.

How participants are selected?

The department attempts to select participants that reflect the broadest possible range within our community; this includes citizens young and old, men and women, business associates, community leaders, and representatives. However, the minimum age is 18 and participants must be in good health.
