Tree/Vegetation Trimming

The Sandy City Tree Stewardship ordinance (15A-25-03) requires a 14 ft. clearance over the road and/or 8 ft. clearance over sidewalks. The ordinance also requires residents to trim trees/vegetation on their property as well as on adjacent park strips to meet the height requirements.  In addition, the sight triangle at intersections shall be cleared of any obstruction that creates a traffic hazard.

Annually, the Streets Division tree crew will inspect trees and vegetation on those streets scheduled for maintenance.  If you receive a green "Trimming Notice", the City is requesting that you make the necessary trimming of the tree(s)/vegetation in order to conform to the item checked on the notice. This action would need to take place within the next 10 days after receipt of the notice.

  • If you decide to trim the tree(s)/vegetation on the City-owned park strip, you must do so within the 10-day period and you are responsible for removing and disposing of the trimmings.
  • If you decide not to trim the tree(s)/vegetation on the park strip, City employees will trim the tree(s)/vegetation. You do not need to call and give permission for the tree(s)/vegetation on the park strip to be trimmed.
  • For the tree(s)/vegetation on your property that impact the right-of-way, if you would like City employees to trim tree(s)/vegetation to ensure proper cutting for the health of the tree, please call the number below to grant the City permission. After 10 days if we do not hear from you, the City tree crew will only trim your tree(s)/vegetation even with the back edge of the sidewalk. If the City crews trim your trees, there will be no cost to the resident.

Tree/Vegetation Removal

If your tree(s)/vegetation is determined to be a hazard and needs to be removed, you will receive a green "Tree/Vegetation Removal" card. On the card, the City is requesting that you remove the tree(s)/vegetation in order to conform to the item checked. This action would need to take place within the next 10 days after receipt of the notice.

  • If you decide to remove the trees(s)/vegetation on the City-owned park strip, you must do so within 10-days after receipt of the notice and you are responsible for disposing of the tree(s)/vegetation.
  • If you decide not to remove the tree(s)/vegetation on the City-owned park strip, City employees will remove the tree(s)/vegetation. You do not need to call and give permission for the tree(s)/vegetation on the park strip to be removed.
