Located in the heart of Saxony, Riesa is part of the area known as the former East Germany. Its 40,000 residents along with elected officials and business leaders have sought opportunities to learn more about free enterprise since Germany’s unification in 1990.
Riesa's economy is largely built on industry due to its location on the Elbe River and the rail system that runs through the town. Manufacturers include tires, soap and miscellaneous building materials. Food processing also employs many citizens. The city which was originally a 12th Century Benedictine monastery is composed of historical architecture mixed with modern technologies.

The beautiful community located in the Elbe River Valley was a candidate to assist in hosting the 2012 Olympic Games. In 2007, the city will celebrate its 888 Year Anniversary. Events will take place throughout the city, including in one of the largest multi-purpose halls in eastern Germany, Riesa's own Erdgas Arena. The city is known for sports and has almost 40 professional and amateur sport associations.
