Board of Adjustment

The Board of Adjustment is a quasi-judicial body charged with the responsibility to provide for just and fair treatment in the administration of the Sandy City zoning ordinances, and to ensure that substantial justice is done. This is accomplished by the granting of variances and ruling on alleged errors.

The Board of Adjustment consists of five (5) regular members and two (2) alternate members who are residents of the City. They are appointed to the Board by the Mayor upon the consent of the City Council. Both regular and alternate members are appointed for a five (5) year term. Vacancies are filled by the Mayor upon consent of the City Council to complete the length of the unexpired term.

The members of the Board of Adjustment are ordinary citizens of Sandy. They are not City employees, but citizens with their own vocations who desire to donate some time to the City. The Board members do not answer to the Mayor, City Council or Planning Commission, and can, act as an independent, quasi-judicial body.

The Board of Adjustment has adopted rules necessary to conduct it affairs. The Board meets as necessary on the second Thursday of each month, and at such other times as the Board may determine. The chairperson, or in his/her absence the acting chairperson, may administer oaths and compel the attendance of witnesses. All meetings are open to the public.

The Board of Adjustment keeps minutes of its proceedings, showing the vote of each member on each question, or if absent or failing to vote indicating such fact, and keeps records of its examinations and other official actions, all of which are public record. All testimony, objections, and rulings, are included in the minutes.
