Fireworks Information

Click here to find out which fireworks are legal to use in Sandy City.

With the upcoming 4th and 24th of July holidays approaching, Sandy City Fire Department would like to remind our citizens to be careful this year. Each year, fireworks are not only responsible for causing fires, but thousands of injuries occur nationwide. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, 9,800 people were treated for fireworks related injuries last year. Of those, half were between the ages of 10-14. Many of the people were treated for burns of the face, hands, and legs.

By following some simple safety tips, you will enjoy a safe and happy summer holiday season.

  • Only use fireworks that were purchased in the borders of the State of Utah. They are Fire Marshall approved and legal to use.
  • Use fireworks in an area clear of other fireworks, combustible materials like wood and grass, buildings and other people.
  • Keep a water source close by to help with extinguishing purposes.
  • Wear proper clothing-cover legs and arms, also no loose clothes. They run the risk of being ignited by sparks.
  • Do not attempt to re-ignite fireworks that don’t work.
  • Do not hold fireworks after they have been lit.
  • If anyone is injured, please contact 911 immediately.

Just like last year, firefighters will be patrolling the neighborhoods when they are not committed to a 911 call. Last year multiple citations were issued by the Fire Department, and the Police Department for the usage of illegal fireworks. If they are purchased out of state, they are illegal.

Sandy Fire Department will issue a citation for illegal fireworks - the minimum fine is $500.00.

Fire Hydrant Inspections

Sandy City Fire Department will be out conducting our annual fire hydrant inspections. Residents may notice firefighters flowing water from all of Sandy's fire hydrants in their respective neighborhoods.

When checking the hydrants, crews are instructed to take off all the caps, flow water, and exercise the street key valve. Water is flowed to make sure that in the event that a fire hydrant is needed, we know that there is sufficient water pressure in that line. When a hydrant is "dry," or in need of repair it is marked out of service and Sandy City Public Works is notified for the repair. Public Works is very quick to repair out of service hydrants, thus the protection to the citizens is at its highest levels at all times.

Annual fire hydrant checks also help to keep citizens and the city's insurance rates at their lowest levels possible.

Sandy residents can help with the inspection program by keeping weeds, grass and trees trimmed away giving at least three feet clearance from fire hydrants and remember that is illegal to park in front of a fire hydrant at any time (Utah State Code148).  If you find that a fire hydrant in your area is in need of repair or service please call Sandy Fire at 568-2930.

If you see crews out checking hydrants, please don’t hesitate to approach them and ask them questions. If you have any questions at all, please contact Sandy City Fire Department at 801-568-2930, or www.sandy.utah.gov.
