Why Should I Learn CPR?

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) can help save lives. In 1990 cardiovascular disease accounted for more than 900,000 deaths, including nearly 500,000 due to heart attack, according to the American Heart Association. About two-thirds of deaths from heart attack occur before the victim reaches the hospital. This is where you are of most value. Many deaths can be prevented if someone trained in CPR provides prompt, life-saving measures until trained professionals take over. You can make a difference!

If You Suspect Someone Is Having a Heart Attack:

  • Call 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY.
  • Encourage them.
  • Sit and calmly wait for the fire department.
  • Be prepared to begin CPR if needed.

Which Course Is For Me?

Sandy City Fire Department offers three CPR courses to the public. All of the courses cover how to help victims of all ages. The course you want to attend depends on your need for training.

CPR for Family and Friends

Most people wishing to learn CPR may attend CPR for Family and Friends. This course is designed for beginners and those wishing to review their CPR skills. It is taught with the Heart Saver CPR course, but there is no assessment of proficiency.

Heart Saver CPR

Those who need basic CPR skills for employment or licensing need to take the Heart Saver CPR course. This course is held with CPR for Family and Friends, but does require a demonstration of understanding and competence in performing CPR.

Students will receive a manual and upon successful completion of the course, a two-year CPR certification from the American Heart Association.

Basic Life Support for the Health care Professional

The third certification is Basic Life Support for the Health Care Provider Professional and is for health care professionals. The course includes two rescuer scenarios, bag mask resuscitation, the use of an AED, and does require a demonstration of competence in performing CPR.
