Temporary Membrane Structure, Tent and Canopy Permit Information

*Tents less than 400 square feet or canopies less than 700 square feet do no need a Tent Permit

  • Fire apparatus access shall be provided.
  • Tents shall not be located within 20 property lines, building, temporary membrane structures, other tents and canopies, parked vehicles or internal combustion engines.
  • Structure shall be adequately braced and anchored.
  • Air supported and inflated structures shall be in accordance with the International Fire Code section 2403.10.
  • Sidewalls, drops and tops shall be composed of flame resistant material. Permanently affixed labels which include size, fabric or material type, date when materials were last treated, trade name of retardant, name of person or firm that applied flame-retardant must be attached to fabric.
  • Floor coverings shall be composed of flame-resistant material.
  • Fire extinguishers are to be located no more than 75 feet travel distance apart.
  • Fire extinguishers must be mounted between 40 to 54 inches from the floor.
  • Fire extinguishers must be unobstructed at all times.
  • The proper type (rating and size) must be provided, minimum 2A 10BC or as modified in IFC 906.3.
  • Fire extinguisher must be inspected and certified annually or after use.
  • Exits shall be spaced equally around perimeter not more than 100 feet apart.
  • Guywires and ropes shall not cross exits at a height of less than 8 feet.
  • Exit signs shall be provided in accordance with IFC 2403.12.6.
  • No smoking signs shall be conspicuously posted.
  • Fireworks, open flames, or hot objects are not allowed to be used in or adjacent to structure.
  • Cooking and heating equipment shall not be located within 10 feet of exits or combustible materials.
  • Tents used for cooking shall be separated from other tents or canopies by a minimum of 20 feet.
  • Outdoor cooking shall not be performed within 20 feet of tent.
  • LP-gas containers shall be located outside a minimum distance of 10 feet away and safety release valves shall be pointed away from tent.
  • LP-gas containers, piping, valves and fittings shall be protected to prevent tampering, damage by vehicles or other hazards.
  • Flammable-liquid-fueled equipment shall not be used in tents.
  • Flammable and combustible liquids cannot be stored within 50 feet.
  • Refueling shall not be performed within 20 feet of structure.
  • Generators shall be separated by a minimum of 20 feet and isolated from the public.
  • Combustible vegetation shall be removed from within 30 feet of tent.
  • Hay, straw or similar combustible materiaals shall not be stored inside or within 20 feet of a tent being used for cooking or public assembly.
  • Floor surfaces inside a tent and the grounds outside and within 30 feet shall be kept clear of combustible waste.
