Home Safety Checklist

  • House number should be easy to read from the street.  This makes finding your home in case of an emergency easier for fire and police response.
  • Do not overload electrical outlets or use extension cords as permanent wiring.
  • Kitchen fires are the number one cause of home fires.  Never leave food unattended while cooking.  If a fire starts in the oven or on the stove use a tight fitting pan lid or cookie sheet to smother the fire.  Also, a fire extinguisher located in the kitchen area is a good idea.
  • Install smoke detectors outside each sleeping area in your home.  Check the batteries when you change your clock for daylight savings time.  Replace some detectors every 7 to 10 years.
  • Create and practice a home escape plan with everyone who lives in your house.  Click here for copy of our Exit Drill In The Home worksheet.
  • Keep small children away from all sources of water, they can drown in as little as 1 to 2 inches of water.  Stay with them when they are taking a bath.
  • Store weapons an bullets away from each other and keep them locked up.
  • Keep a list of emergency contacts by your telephone and a list of them on your cell phone.  When an emergency happens you'll be prepared.

Stay Safe!
