In Utah, violators who receive a citation for a minor traffic offense may have their violation heard informally before a traffic referee. Individuals who cannot come to an agreement with the referee or who change their mind within 10 days after reaching an agreement reserve the right to have the matter set for a trial before a judge.
Most violators who qualify for a Plea in Abeyance and Traffic Class referral do not have to meet with a referee first. They may be referred by a court clerk upon determination of eligibility.
Hearings are conducted on a walk up basis and do not require an appointment. They are held Tuesdays through Fridays (except for holidays) from 12:30 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. Check at the clerk's window to get on the hearing sign-up list. Wait times are generally less than 30 minutes.
