The intent of the program is to educate and involve youth in police operations, to interest them in possible law enforcement careers, and to build a mutual understanding between the police and the youth in the community.

The education aspect provides knowledge of law enforcement functions. Through classroom and hands-on training, the program establishes an awareness of the complexities of police service and prepared the participates for future law enforcement careers.

The duties of an Explorer include traffic and crowd control at special events, crime prevention events, found bike pick-ups, report writing, assisting with missing children, fingerprinting, first-aid, clerical assistance, crime lab internships, and a ride-a-long program.

The Explorer Post also has an Honor Guard that participates in the presentation of the American Flag at special events. The Honor Guard also preforms funeral detail.

The Explorer Program is a very intensive professional law enforcement career orientation program. In addition to the law enforcement training the Explorers receive, they also will learn leadership and self-discipline skills.

The Sandy Police Department’s Explorer Program provides youth (between the ages of 14 to 21) with the opportunity to experience law enforcement first hand.
