Sandy Traffic Accidents Lowered due to New Safety MeasuresPosted: May 01, 2012
Over the past few years, Sandy City has completed many large road construction projects that have increased capacity but have led to a decrease in traffic accidents making the roadways safer. Safety measures have been implemented as part of the road construction projects which include: improved intersection controls, the use of raised medians for controlling access points, and an improved engineering design. In addition, the Sandy City Police Department has played an important role in reducing the accident rate within the City. Besides the traditional enforcement measures, such as the radar monitoring, innovative new devices to accurately determine vehicle following distances are being used in the field to help officers keep the roadway an even safer place for all users.
As you can see on the graph, there has been a noticeable 25% decrease in the total number of traffic accidents since a high peak occurred in 2007. During that year, Sandy City responded to nearly seven accidents per day while in 2011 that number was reduced to five accidents per day.
Though a 25% reduction in accidents is noteworthy, there are still many things that can be done to further reduce this number. As a driver, please be mindful of posted speed limits, drive courteously through residential areas, and watch for pedestrians and bicyclists. Finally, always wear a seatbelt and do not become distracted while driving.
