- I want a career with Sandy City. How can I get my foot in the door?
The first step to a Sandy City career is to apply for a City job. The Human Resources Department frequently opens new recruitments for different jobs, which may have different recruitment time-frames. Employment applications for these jobs are accepted online during recruitment periods only.
- Who can apply for a job with the City?
Anyone eligible to work in the United States and who meets the minimum job requirements as stated in the job posting or ad. Potential applicants are generally not required to live within Sandy City boundaries.
- How can I find out which jobs are currently open for recruitment at Sandy City?
We advertise our open positions in two ways. You can find an updated list of open positions by: a) checking our online current openings page, b) calling our office (801-568-7253).
- Do you accept applications for positions that are not currently open?
No. We only accept applications for positions which are currently open for recruitment.
However, if there is not a current opening for a specific City position you are interested in, you can fill out a Job Interest Card. We will then notify you when the position is later opened for recruitment.
- How do I apply for a position with Sandy City?

- Should I include a resume?
Yes. You are welcome to submit a resume with your application.
- Where can I go for more information about a position I am interested in?
You can access a complete job description for each Sandy City position on the Human Resources section of the Sandy City website. Paper copies of job descriptions can also be obtained by coming into our office. These job descriptions explain the duties as well as the required skills and abilities for each position. - How many jobs can I apply for? Do I need more than one application?
There is currently no limit to the number of jobs you can apply for with Sandy City. Keep in mind, however, that we receive many applications from fully qualified candidates for each open position. It is in your best interest to apply only for those positions you are most qualified for.
Through our online application process, you can use one application for multiple positions. Because of the highly competitive nature of our open positions, you will be more successful if you customize your experience and qualifications to the position.
- How can I know the current status of my application? Will I be notified?
Once the position closing date has passed, processing and reviewing your application requires a MINIMUM of two weeks. After submitting your application, it is reviewed by either the Human Resources department or the department the position is located in.
Those reviewing applications select the most qualified candidates for interviews. We base this selection on how well the demonstrated experience, education, skills and abilities of each applicant match the needs of the position. If you apply for a benefitted position, you will be notified either way of the outcome. If you apply for a non-benefitted position, you will only be notified if selected for an interview. If you are selected for an interview, you will be called by a City representative to schedule a time.
- Do you keep my application on file?
We do keep applications on file for two years, but this is only for record keeping purposes. In other words, your application will not automatically be re-submitted if the same position opens up again in the future. To re-submit an application, you will need to apply online again. By submitting a new application, you will also be able to provide your most up-to-date skills and experience.
- What should I expect if I am called for a selection interview?
Those who interview you will have a list of questions they will ask during the interview. You will be rated on how well you answer the questions and demonstrate your qualifications for the position. In addition, you may be required to complete a test that measures your ability to complete essential functions of the position. You will be notified of the results shortly after a hiring decision has been made.
- What happens if I am selected for a position?
If selected for a position, you will receive a conditional offer of employment from Sandy City. Some positions require that you pass a background check, and all positions are contingent on passing a drug test. After meeting these conditions, you will be given a starting date. You will also be required to attend an employee orientation session.
- What do I need to know if I am interested in a Police or Fire career?
The Police Officer Addendum (found here) lists the requirements to apply for a Police Officer position. You can also refer to the Sandy City Police Department section of the website for more information on becoming a Police Officer with Sandy City.
The Sandy City Fire Department hires a full-time firefighter from the current pool of Volunteer Firefighters and/or from the Metro Fire Recruitment & Testing Consortium (MFTC). Any open volunteer positions within the Fire department will be listed in our Current Openings section of the website. Also, Firefighter and Volunteer Firefighter job descriptions are available online.
- How do I apply for a position with the Police or Fire department?
To apply for a Police Officer position, you must submit a standard Sandy City employment application along with the Police Officer Addendum, a resume, and your POST entrance exam score (80% minimum). All four items must be submitted or your application will be incomplete and you will not be invited to the next step in the testing process.
To apply for an open Volunteer Firefighter position, interested candidates should submit a Sandy City application and copies of any required certifications online.
- What is the hiring process for Police and Fire positions?

The Sandy City Fire Department hires for its full-time positions from the currrent pool of Volunteer Firefighters and/or from the Metro Fire Testing Consortium (MFTC). If you are interested in a Volunteer position within the Fire department, you can view our Current Openings or complete a Job Interest Card and we will notify you when the next Volunteer Firefighter position becomes available.

- Are all employees eligible for benefits?
