Irrigation Tech/Maintenance Worker I

STATUS: Regular (benefitted) This position is on the irrigation crew. Person will help maintain and make repairs to sprinkler systems at city buildings, parks, and streetscapes. Occasional after hours, weekend, and holiday work is required for this position.
SUMMARY: Under the close supervision of the Assistant Parks Division Head, Parks Irrigation Area Supervisor and Crew Leaders/Irrigation Specialist, performs skilled work pertaining to risk management, maintenance and construction of City parks, streetscapes, sites, cemetery, Parks and Recreation facilities, City special events, irrigation systems, and/or athletic fields.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: High School diploma or equivalent preferred; six months training in irrigation system maintenance and construction and/or related field preferred. One year closely related work experience required. Must possess a valid Utah Driver’s License; must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months of hire; must have CPR certification; must be certified by the department on all assigned crew equipment within six months of hire. A one-year probationary period is a prerequisite to this position. Knowledge of tools, machines, and equipment used in the maintenance and construction of irrigation systems within City parks, athletic fields, the cemetery and recreation facilities; principles of supervision and planning; OSHA safety standards; general construction practice and procedures; principles of plant and turf life; knowledge of basic irrigation design and water conservation principles. Great responsibility for the care, condition and use of materials, equipment, and tools; inform supervisor of irrigation problems that could restrict or deny use of parks; responsible for some seasonal employees. Minimal contacts with other departments and the public requiring tact and judgment. Regular use of both light and heavy trucks and four-wheeled ATVs; frequent use of riding and walk-behind trenchers, tractors, backhoes, and other facility, park and irrigation maintenance related equipment.
