Giving away free smoke detectors from Healthy Sandy
In 2006, the Sandy Fire Chief was concerned about recent deaths in Sandy that occurred due to the lack of a working smoke detector. He brought the issue to Healthy Sandy for consideration on how to address this problem. Healthy Sandy decided to take on this issue and raised $12,000 in contributions from its partners and local businesses. This was then used to purchase nearly 900 smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at cost from a participating vendor. These detectors were distributed and installed for free in select senior and low income households. This program was so successful, the Sandy Fire Department and Healthy Sandy have continued the program with on-going support from local businesses and extended the offer of a free smoke or CO detector to all low income Sandy residents.
